Gibraltar – Morocco Rally

The Twelfth Anniversary of the Gibraltar to Morocco Sailing Rally

Another year has flown past (where do they go?) and Gibraltar’s yachting fraternity is once again gearing up for the Gibraltar – Morocco Rally.  The “world’s most sociable rally” is now in its twelfth year and plans to take the same format and purpose as previous years – to cruise in good company put a smile on people’s faces.

Running from 22 to 25 June 2012, the first “stage” of the Rally will see skippers and crew come together for a briefing at Charlie’s Restaurant in Marina Bay on Thursday evening at 6pm.  Participants will receive detailed notes on the Rally, a goodie bag of useful “stuff” and undoubtedly accompany it all with a few drinks.  Fortunately the massed race start on Friday, from the North Mole, is at a respectable 1pm giving plenty of time to clear the hangover cobwebs for those who revelled in neighbouring Ocean Village’s watering holes.

“World’s Most Sociable Rally”

Several hours later and on African territory, the Rally-ers will have their first taste of Marina Smir hospitality with a cheese and wine evening.  Saturday will bring the usual afternoon fun and dockside Olympic games followed by prize giving (some of them booby!) and mouth-watering barbecue on Saturday night.  On Sunday weary Rally heads and legs will make the leisurely Strait crossing back to their home port – unless of course you fancy sneaking in another 24 hours at Marina Smir, perhaps taking a trip to nearby Tetouan for a spot of sightseeing, the stunning town of Chefchaouen with its photogenic blue-rinsed buildings or just a bit of pampering in the Spa hotel neighbouring Marina Smir, and making a Monday return instead.

With 40 or more yachts expected to participate and a good deal of interest from the public and the press, sponsorship opportunities are available for interested companies.
